82 years later, she returned a book borrowed from the library

In Texas, a woman gives a book to a library 82 years late. The book had been borrowed by his grandmother in July 1943, and the fine to which the latter exposes herself today amounts to 16,000 dollars, or more than 13,000 euros.

Better late than never. A library in Texas recovered a book borrowed 82 years ago, in July 1943. The woman who reported her claimed to have found her in the affairs of her grandmother, Maria Del Socorro Allonte Flore, who had given herself as she worked at the American Embassy in Mexico.

The work in question is a copy of “Your Child, His Family and His Friends”, which we owe to the family and relational advisor Frances Bruce Strain. In view of His Excellent Conservation, he will be exhibited until the end of August at the Central Library of San Antonio and will be sold for the benefit of a charitable work thereafter.

A fine of $ 16,000

However, this delay should have cost the fault very dearly, if it had not died in the meantime. Indeed, if in the 1940s, the fine amounted to 300 dollars per day of delay, with the calculation of inflation, this would today represent more than 16,000 dollars, or around 13,600 euros.

Fortunately for Maria Del Socorro Aldrate Flore, the library has abolished the costs of delays since 2021, a relief that she has shot in an irony in a letter, relayed by CSB News. “Hopefully there is no fine to pay, because my grandmother can no longer settle it,” she joked.

As crazy as it may seem, this staggering delay is not a record. This title returns to the Cambridge Library, which saw a book returned to him in 1956, when he was borrowed in 1668, 288 years earlier.
