French prisons had only 62,509 operational places on July 1, i.e. a global prison density of 135.9 % which even exceeded 200 % in 29 establishments or penitentiary and 150 % in 68 others. In one year, French prisons have 6,442 more detainees. The prison density reaches 167 % in a prison, where the prisoners awaiting judgment, therefore alleged innocent, and those sentenced to short sentences are imprisoned.
Overpopulation and dilapidation of buildings
The threshold of 80,000 detainees was crossed for the first time on November 1, 2024 (80,130). He has not stopped climbing since January 1, he had since recorded a slight settlement (80,669 detainees against 80,792 on December 1), not unusual during this period of the year. Among the people imprisoned on July 1, 22,822 are defendants, in detention pending their final judgment.
A total of 103,499 people were placed under the nut at the beginning of the month, a number that continues to increase. Among them, there are 18,548 people who are not detained subject to placement under electronic bracelet or placement outside.
