The number of brown bear on the island of Hokkaido decreased in 2023 for the first time since 1991, according to the latest estimates published in August. There were around 11,600 at the end of 2023, 500 less than the previous year. The Hokkaido government launched an unprecedented hunt for brown bears, with 1,804 specimens captured from April 2023 to March 2024.
In Japan, meetings between humans and bears have reached a record level, with 219 people attacked and six dead over this same period.
