A Chinese mountaineer killed on the slopes of K2 in Pakistan

A Chinese climber was killed on the slopes of the K2, the second highest peak in the world, becoming the fourth victim of this summer mountaineer season in Pakistan, authorities announced on Thursday.

Guan Jing was part of a group of 30 mountaineers to have reached the K2 summit in the north of the country on Monday, one of the most dangerous mountains in the world.

During his descent, the mountaineer was “victim Tuesday of a fall in stones,” said AFP Ahmad, a local official on Tuesday.

“An army chartered plane expects better weather conditions to recover its body,” he added.

Confirming his death, the Alpine Club of Pakistan, which oversees expeditions, said that “stone falls are frequent between camp 1 and the advanced base camp where the accident occurred”.

A Pakistani mountaineer had already lost his life on the K2 on July 19, swept away by an avalanche located just above the base camp, 6,000 meters above sea level.

Two other experienced climbers were also killed in July on Pakistani glaciers.

By trying to climb the Pic Laila, mountain in the Karakoram chain, the double German Olympic champion of Biathlon Laura Dahlmeier had been affected, at the end of July, by a fall of stones at 5,700 m altitude.

Three weeks earlier, a 46 -year -old climber, Klara Kolouchova, the first Czech woman to climb Everest and K2, had a fatal fall on the slopes of Nangaparbat, the ninth higher peak in the world.

Five of the fourteen mountains of over 8,000 meters are in Pakistan, where the summer mountaineering season begins in early June and lasts until the end of August.
