A heat wave: while temperatures get carried away, a couple with three children forced to live in a garage of 10 square meters after being expelled from their accommodation

Aged 3, 5 and 9 years old, they spend their nights in front of their school.

The heat wave Also hit very hard on the other side of the Pyrenees. And when the climate phenomenon is coupled with a social drama, it can quickly become a question of survival.

Our colleagues from Diari de Girona inform that a family has been expelled from their accommodation last May without a folding solution despite the alert given to social services. Result, this couple and their three children aged 3, 5 and 9, have since found themselves to “live” and sleep in a garage located opposite the school of the little ones. All in unsanitary conditions while temperatures are thinking of the ceiling.

Distress

It all started in May 2024, therefore, when Younes Oucharaa, employed in a bar-restaurant in Barceloneta, meant his boss that he would take a leave because of a back pain that still prevents him from working today. His boss, who was also his lessor, then made the decision to expel the family from his accommodation.

“He told me that he would give me a year to find another accommodation, that he was not in a hurry. But a few days later, I found a letter from the court saying that they wanted to express me”explains Younes to our colleagues.

In March of the following year, justice meant to the family that she should leave the premises on May 5. For a while, the mother and the three children found a withdrawal solution with friends while younes lived outside. Or at least in a garage squatted by two men (ironworkers) that he and his wife helped from time to time. A few days later, the Younes family joined him in this space of 10 square meters “filled with mattresses, where scrap metal now coexists with three schoolbags and plastic toys”write our colleagues.

Younes tried everything. The Guardia Urbana (the municipal police) “Can not do anything”. And with 900 euros per month, it is impossible to find an apartment by legal means. His desperate attempt to squat an apartment has also proven a bitter failure. “We stayed there for two hours, the police immediately arrived and brought us out of there”.

Without solution, Younes launched this call in the Catalan media. But, he says, the case of this family excluded from the housing market would not be isolated at the Llobregat Hospitalet.
