Brussels the pretty
By pushing a little further north, we arrived at the ancient town of Ainlayville, renamed Brussels in 1871. This small municipality of around 1,000 people is one of these renowned citizens Darwin McCutcheon and Jack McIntyre, two professional hockey players, as well as many artists including Janet Cardiff and Frances Beatrice Taylor.
If Brussels, in Belgium, is known as the “capital of Europe”, it is said, not without reason, that the Ontario Brussels is “the prettiest village in Ontario”.
Other cities of interest
This concludes part of our world visit to Ontario. But there remains a lot to see! What about the cities of Berlin (now Guelph), Cairo, Damascus or Lisbon west of Toronto. Or Athens, Khartoum, Manilla, Moscow or Warsaw east of the metropolis?
In Saskatchewan, you can visit Amsterdam, Hague, Riga and Stockholm. In Manitoba, there are the cities of Brussels and Raykjavik. In New Brunswick, that of Baghdad. There are also many Canadian cities with Australian, Spanish, New Zealand or Portuguese names that are just having to be discovered!
Toronto, Ohio
If Canada was inspired by other cities to name its own, other countries, in turn, have been inspired by us. The city of Toronto is among the most exported names. Indeed, there is a Toronto in Ohio, and also in Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri and Tennessee, not to mention that in Australia.
