A new service for people with disabilities up to $ 2,400 per year

Good news: the federal government has set up a new service for disabled people who can amount to $ 2,400 per year.

This measure, announced in 2022, has been in force since June 2025.

“The Canadian service for people with disabilities (PCPH) is a major federal initiative aimed at reducing poverty and improving the financial security of people with working age disability”, explains Natalie Hotte, Chef de practice, risk management in knowledge and taxation, CQFF, partner of Raymond Chabot Thornton.

People who are entitled to it could receive up to $ 200 per month. The first payments will be made in July 2025 for requests received and approved no later than June 30, 2025. If the request is approved after this date, the amounts will be paid retroactively by going up until June 2025.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible, you must be aged 18 to 64, to reside in Canada, to be entitled to the tax credit for disabled people (CIPH) and have produced a tax return for the previous year. “Income should not exceed a certain threshold. For example, to receive the maximum service, the income of a single person cannot be more than $ 23,000, ”says Natalie Hotte.

You should know that the first $ 10,000 won by a bachelor with disabilities are exempt. This means that in fact, the 20% reduction threshold will only be applied from $ 33,000 (including the $ 10,000 exemption). From $ 45,000, the service will fall to zero.

The amounts and exemption levels differ depending on the family situation and if one or the two spouses are disabled (see table).

Status Exemption from work income Reduction threshold Threshold with exemption Reduction rate Maximum income
Bachelor 10 000 $ 23 000 $ 33 000 $ 20 % 45 000 $
Couple (with a single member eligible for the service) 14 000 $ 32 500 $ 46 500 $ 20 % 58 500 $
Couple (with two members eligible for the service) 14 000 $ 32 500 $ 46 500 $ 10 %* 70 500 $

Exclusions

Natalie Hotte stresses that the government has planned certain exclusions so as not to penalize people who receive certain amounts. “Thus, the withdrawals of a registered invalidity regime (REEI) will not be counted in income,” she says.

The same is true if the person has one or more children and perceives the Canadian children’s allowance (ACE).

You should know that even if the person with disabilities lives with their parents, their income will not be taken into account, but only that of the spouse if necessary.
