A second case of measles identified in a 45 -year -old woman in Reunion

On August 8, 2025, a new case of measles was identified in a 45 -year -old woman in Reunion, a total of two cases identified in the territory, said Public Health France this Thursday. “No epidemiological link could be identified with the 1st case of July 17,” said the Institute. “In Reunion, after an indigenous traffic episode in 2019 (96 cases declared), no new cases had been reported on the island. After a first case in mid-July, a second indigenous case was declared at ARS Reunion on August 8, 2025, with a 45-year-old woman who was not vaccinated and with a notion of travel in Thailand,” said SPF.

Health risk preventive and management measures have been implemented by ARS.

According to the vaccination bulletin published by Public Health France in April 2025 in infants, “vaccination coverage (CV) at 2 doses against measles, mumps and rubella (ROR) was 80% in 2024, that is, lower than the 95% target to interrupt the transmission of the virus”.

In this context, “the indentification of a second indigenousness testifies to the circulation of the virus on the island. The possibility of the appearance of grouped cases, the installation of transmission chains, or even epidemic recovery cannot therefore be excluded”, alert SPF, which estimates that “the start of the school year next week could be a factor favoring the resumption of the circulation of measles on Reunion territory”.

– measles, a serious disease with high contagiousness –

Fever, cough, fatigue, nasal flow, conjunctivitis, followed by an eruption, are the most common symptoms of measles which can cause serious complications (laryngites, otitis, pneumonies …) in children, as in adults, especially in immunocompromised people and pregnant women (risk for the mother and the child).

The virus transmitting by air, all non -immunized people (children and adults) are likely to contract measles.

In a non -vaccinated population, it is estimated that a contagious person can contaminate 15 to 20 people.

In case of symptoms:

It is essential to consult your attending physician and adopt barriers to limit the transmission of the virus:

– Contact your doctor to make an appointment, do not go spontaneously to the medical office or to the emergency room.
– Reduce contacts with other people.
– Activate barriers’ gestures: wash your hands regularly or use a hydro-alcoholic solution, cough or sneeze in your elbow or in a handkerchief, fly in a single-use handkerchief then throw it away.
– regularly ventilate the parts in which we are.
– Respect a distance of at least one meter with the others.
– In addition, wear a mask when you have symptoms.
