A meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin is planned “in the coming days”. The preparations for this summit have already started, said the Diplomatic Advisor to the Russian president, Iouri Ouchakov, quoted by Russian state agencies on Thursday.

(Keystone-ATS) “At the suggestion of the American party, an agreement in principle has been concluded to organize a bilateral summit in the coming days,” said Ouchakov. “We are now starting to settle the details with our American colleagues,” he added.

The diplomat said that this meeting could be held “next week” and that a place had been agreed “in principle” between the two parties, without however specifying which one.

Russia, however, did not respond to the American idea of a three meeting between MM. Trump, Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, he said.

On Wednesday, in a sudden diplomatic acceleration of efforts aimed at putting an end to the conflict in Ukraine which has lasted since early 2022, the American president had mentioned a meeting “very soon” with Vladimir Putin, according to the American press.

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his call on Thursday for a face-to-face meeting with Mr. Putin, believing that a summit in terms of leaders constituted “a very clear priority” which could “lead to a truly lasting peace”.

These statements are involved in the wake of a visit deemed “productive” of the American emissary Steve Witkoff in Moscow, where he notably spoke with Vladimir Putin.

Mr. Zelensky exchanged with Trump on the phone on Wednesday after Steve Witkoff’s visit to the Kremlin. Several European leaders have also taken part in this conversation.

The Ukrainian leader said Thursday morning that he had planned to keep “several” conversations during the day, notably with the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as with French and Italian officials.
