The first colony of European barbastels was observed in Belgium in 2016. by a team from Natagora. She made this discovery after four years of research. The colony had taken up residence in a large beech (a kind of tree) dead. At the time, 17 individuals had been recorded.

A second colony

A few days ago, a second colony of European barbastels was spotted by Natagora volunteers. It was observed in the same region as the first colony, in the province of Luxembourg, in southern Wallonia. Like the first. this colony took up residence in a dead tree still on the foot (the trunk is still standing). You can see it in the photo below.

A total of 22 individuals were identified in this colony. The bats once identified. some of them have a sensor to be able to follow their movements because they change their place of life every two or three days.
