A recent discovery in the beta version of iOS 26 suggests that Apple AirPods could offer a new live translation capacity, directly in real world conversations.
Real -time translation of conversations
Apple initially unveiled its live translation function during WWDC25, by presenting its applications in FaceTime calls, telephone conversations and text messages. However, real -time translation for face -to -face interactions was remarkably absent from the initial announcement. New elements suggest that this feature may be under development.
In the beta 6 version for iOS 26 developers, a system image appeared, describing a unique gesture involving to support the two AirPods stems simultaneously. This image, linked to the translate application and displaying text in several languages (English, Portuguese, French and German), seems specific to the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) and the AirPods (4th generation).
Rely on existing live translation features
Although Apple has not explicitly mentioned the translation in real time for the AirPods during WWDC25, previous reports of Bloomberg alluded to its development. This feature is perfectly aligned with the live translation functions already announced for FaceTime, messages and phone, thus strengthening the role of portable devices in the facilitation of communication. Similar applications can be observed in devices such as Meta Ray-Bans.
Although we do not yet know what iPhones will take care of this new gesture, it is unlikely that the AirPods manage the entire translation process independently. The processing power of the iPhone will probably play a crucial role. It can reasonably be assumed that Apple’s material requirements for other Live Translation features will determine compatibility.
