Alberta exceeds the United States with more than 1,300 cases of confirmed measles

The province has now identified 1314 cases since the beginning of March.

The centers for the control and prevention of diseases in the United States have reported 1288 cases since the start of the year in 39 states.

The epidemic of this highly contagious disease has not resulted in any deaths so far in Alberta.

Three people, including two children, died in the United States.

The United States has also recorded an increase in hospitalizations: CDC reports 162 hospitalized people, compared to just over 100 Albertans.

Dr. Craig Jenne, professor of immunology and infectious diseases at the University of Calgary, said that the low vaccination rate of Alberta meant that it was only a matter of time before the province exceeds the United States in number of cases.

“It was quite clear that we were going to attend growth, unfortunately, for several weeks, even several months,” he said. The spread is really very fast here. And we have not yet noticed any significant slowdown in the spread, unlike other provinces. ”

Dr. Jenne explained that he did not think that Alberta or other provinces confronted with hatching would be able to master transmission before fall, when Canada could lose its state of measles eradication, which it has been holding since 1998.
