Always too expensive, electric cars do not take off in France

Electrics still do not take off. Their registrations fell a little less (-4.4 %) than the French market as a whole (-7.9 % from January to July), according to figures published this Friday by the French automotive platform (PFA). Nevertheless. Despite the deployments of new “zero emission” models more accessible such as the Renault R5 or the Citroën Ë-C3, these vehicles represent only 17.5 % of the tricolor car market. Very, very far behind the hybrid models (thermal engine with electric assistance), which now assume 44.8 % of the market. Hybrid sales climbed 30 % during the first seven months of the year. Electrics are even largely behind the good old traditional petrol models (23 % of the tricolor car market).

France is however in advanced countries in Europe. Throughout the Union, electricity represents just 15.6 % of the market. Hybrids weigh almost 35 %. The share deemed too low of electricity by the public authorities is annoying. In order to comply with the rules initially provided for by the European Commission, registrations for electric cars should indeed exceed 22 % of the market over the year in Europe. We are very far from it.
