AMD finalise son socket AM6

The AMD Socket of AMD could arrive at the end of 2027 in early 2027. It will succeed the current AM5 which should draw its last cartridges with Zen 6 scheduled for the second part of next year. This future socket will host the Zen 7 processors. The first rumors evoke a socket with around 2100 pins, against 1718 for AM5, which represents an increased pins of 22 %, while retaining the same physical dimensions. On paper, this means that AM5 cooling systems would be compatible. Another important change is future processors that will use AM6 will benefit from the management of DDR6 memories and the PCIE 6.0. According to the bits and chips AMD sources would finalize the latest design details.

The AM6 socket for the end of 2027… at best

According to our sources, the AMD socket of AMD will be very similar to the AM5 socket. In order to perpetuate its tradition, AMD will allow us to reuse the coolers currently used on the AM5 socket. (For example, we could use the former coolers of the Socket 939 on the AM4 socket!) But… how can AMD integrate the new generation of PCIe 6.0 and DDR6 technology on the same surface area without problem? We have seen that the Intel 1700 socket was larger than the Intel 1200 socket. AMD, meanwhile, wishes to keep the same size and must therefore increase the density of the pins. This is why some recent PAD patents deal with this subject, such as the US patent 20250149428.The new AM6 socket will include around 2100 pins and will be marketed in the 2028, when Zen 7 is ready.

In the meantime, that the owners of an AM5 motherboard reassure themselves. By the arrival of the next of his replacement, they will have at least one update with Zen 6 which promises to be promising. And as AMD seems to want to maintain this image of sustainability of its platforms, it is not impossible to see other processors lengthen the lifespan of the current socket. A situation that we see with AM4, still present and which still has some competitive processors.
