This is the first cause of disability of young adults who are not linked to an accident. Plates sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the nervous system. Its progression over the years leads to a handicap which often leads to a loss of autonomy once elderly. In France, more than 120,000 people are treated for multiple sclerosis, including more than 70 % of women. Treatments are used to slow down the progression of this disease at the moment incurable. The more the pathology is detected early, the faster they can be implemented. A team of Canadian researchers discovered that the first health problems occur 15 years before the disease declaration.
Fatigue and anxiety lead to consult 15 years before the diagnosis
This study, published on 1is August 2025 on Jama Network Open, is part of a multiple sclerosis research program and its warning signs, led by Dr Helen Tremlett, Canadian researcher at the University of British Columbia. For this new part of their work, neurologists compared the care path of more than 2,000 patients with multiple sclerosis with that of more than 10,000 healthy people. The history of medical records was peeled up to 25 years before the diagnosis.
