A plant as effective as valium?

What if a simple aromatic grass could calm anxiety as well as a medication? This is in any case what Indian researchers have managed to discover, with coriander, well known in the kitchen, which, according to them, would have anxiolytic effects comparable to valium (Diazepam) … at least in mice for the moment before being tested in humans, reports Health Women’s Journal.

Their study, published in theIndian Journal of Pharmacologyshows that coriander extracts have reduced signs of anxiety among rodents, as well as the famous tranquilizer. The treated mice explored their environment more freely, a classic sign of stress.

This calming potential would be explained by the presence of linalol (with relaxing effect) and flavonoids, natural compounds close in their structure of diazepam.

Already used for centuries in traditional medicines, coriander could therefore become a promising natural alternative. It is easily integrated into food – fresh, infusion or diffusion – and would not present the side effects of synthetic treatments.

Only be careful, warning Indian researchers: these results were only observed in animals (mice in this case). Therefore, coriander does not replace medical treatment or professional opinion.
