A Russian bombardment on Dobropillia, in Donetsk Oblast, left at least two dead and 26 injured, according to local authorities

Do we know the daily production capacity of Russian drone? I imagine it is greater than what is drawn every day. Is there a defense strategy against this threat which seems to go only by increasing?

It is extremely difficult to objectively assess the production capacity of Russian drone manufacturers, but the salvés have increased considerably in recent months, which certainly testifies to a sharp increase in production. According to Ukrainian analysts of data in open sources of Frontelligence Insight, whose information is to be considered with caution, it was on average 60.5 units per day between February and April, which makes 1,850 drones per month.

According to the Ukrainian edition of the magazine Forbeswhich quotes the Ukrainian military intelligence services, the monthly production rate, which would have been multiplied by five since the summer of 2024, has been around 2,700 Shahed-136 or Gueran attack drones and 2,500 lures at the end of May.

To cope with the strategy of saturation of the defenses implemented by the Russian army with these salvas of drones, the Ukrainian army is based in particular on 900 mobile defense units, mainly armed with anti -aid cannons and machine guns mounted on various vehicles. Equipped with thermal imaging systems, they are also connected to a network of acoustic sensors and radars.

The Ukrainian forces also regularly aim for production sites, in particular that of Ielabouga, Tatarstan, using its own drones, and begin to use interceptor drones, as President Volodyr Zelensky recently pointed out. The use of very expensive soil-to-air missiles against these cheap weapons used in very large numbers does not seem possible.

“The intensive use of these low-cost drones underlines the need to help Ukraine discover new inexpensive countermeasures limiting the capacity of the Russian punitive campaign”write researchers from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, in a report published in May. They recommend that European and American companies are recommending to collaborate to test new air defense approaches based on Ukrainian innovations and emerging electronic warfare approaches, even high energy lasers, to set up a multilayer defense system.

Civil losses in sharp increase in the first half of Ukraine, according to a report by the OSCE

“Monitoring of hostilities conduct (…) has shown that 1is December 2024 to May 31, 2025, the Russian Federation continued to use explosive weapons extended in densely populated areas, with flagrant contempt for international humanitarian law, including principles of distinction and proportionality “deplores the office of democratic institutions and human rights (BIDDH) of the OSCE.

“During the six months preceding on May 31, 2025, the number of civilian victims verified in the Ukrainian areas controlled by the government was more than 50 % greater than that of the corresponding period in 2024.”

“On a much smaller scale, Ukraine also carried out bombings and drone raids in the populated areas of the Ukrainian regions occupied by Russia as well as in the border regions of the Russian Federation, which has sometimes made civilian victims”he continues. On the basis of testimonies, the Biddh also reports “Arbitrary detentions”, of “Forced disappearances” and “Condemnation on the basis of forged accusations from scratch” as well as acts of torture in the areas of Ukraine occupied by Russia.
