Nearly 75,000 Mexicans have voluntarily left the United States to reinstall himself in Mexico since the return to power in January by US President Donald Trump, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said on Wednesday.
After the nomination of Donald Trump, who made the fight against immigration one of the priorities of his second term, Mexico launched a program called “Mexico you kiss” to help the repatriation of nationals wishing to leave the United States, which includes economic aid.
“About 75,000 compatriots, Mexican and Mexican, have returned to the country since January 20, when President Trump came into office,” said leftist president at her usual morning press conference.
About 45,000 of them received aid, added Ms. Sheinbaum without giving details.
These voluntary returns take place in a context of intensifying police descents, detentions and expulsions of people in an irregular situation in the United States, especially in Los Angeles, a city which concentrates the greatest number of Mexicans living outside their country.
According to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, around 12 million citizens live abroad, including 97% in the United States.
On Tuesday, Claudia Sheinbaum urged Washington to send Mexicans back to their homes that may end up in American detention centers, where human rights groups have denounced degrading treatments to migrants.
