Between hyperrealism and ultra -wide angle, Meta presents prototypes of VR helmet

Meta pivoted artificial intelligence, for which the social networks giant invests crazy sums. But augmented reality and virtual reality, two technologies at the heart of the more or less deceased metarers, continue to be developed there. The proof with these prototypes.

Despite absolutely abyssal losses (4.5 billion billion in the second quarter!), Reality Labs continue to work on new technologies for virtual/increased/mixed reality headsets Meta. Once is not customary, the lab has opened its doors to present several prototypes of helmets developed by the Display Systems Research (DSR) and Optics, Photonics, and Light Systems (Opals) groups. Appliances that will be presented in public during the Siggraph show in Vancouver next week.

Meta continues to believe it

The Tiramisu helmet is an ultra-high loyalty model designed to push the limits of realism and immersion with two very high resolution micro-room screens. It offers angular resolution above the retinal threshold (90 pixels per degrees, i.e. x3.6 compared to Quest 3), contrasts three times higher than quest 3 and a record brightness-up to 1,400 nits, 14 times that of Quest 3!

This helmet, which is intended for pure research, will be used to demonstrate maximum visual fidelity, the objective being to display a virtual image which is almost impossible to distinguish from reality. On the other hand, it is necessary to accommodate a reduced field of vision (33 x 33 degrees) and a higher weight than other devices of the same kind.

The Boba 3 is a prototype mixed reality with very large field of vision: with 180 degrees horizontally and 120 degrees with vertical (against 110/96 for Quest 3), it covers almost 90 % of human vision, which makes it an ideal candidate for total immersion. Each eye has a 4K screen with an advanced “pancake” optics. The design is close to that of headsets, but you have to connect a very strong PC to take advantage of it.

If it is unlikely that these prototypes are transformed into consumer products, it goes without saying that the technologies developed for these devices will be found in future Quest and especially Meta connected glasses.
