Bottal

The heart of the village of Blatten should be made habitable by 2029. Similarly, a year earlier than initially planned, in order to allow the victims to reach all of their insurance allowances, assures the “New Zürcher Zeitung”. This announcement was made by Matthias Bellwald, president of the Haut-Valaisan commune, during a meeting on Tuesday evening.

The locality. destroyed at the end of May by the collapse of a glacier, is the subject of an accelerated reconstruction calendar. According to this new schedule. the districts and hamlets spared should be reinvested in 2026 and hotel capacities should be available at the end of 2028, thus preparing a return to normal for the following year.

This acceleration of the calendar is mainly explained by the conditions imposed by building insurance. The blaten: new village must come latter have already paid 75% of the amount assured to the owners who have lost all of their accommodation. However. the remaining 25% will only be granted if the victims buy or build a new home in Valais within five years. For Matthias Bellwald, it therefore appears “logical” that the new Blaten is ready by then.

An uncertain reconstruction program

This rapid reconstruction program, however, collides with important uncertainties. According to the “NZZ”. the village site remains covered with a debris cone “as unstable as on the first day”, according to the declarations of the chief of the regional driving staff, which also describes the agenda of the president of the commune of “very ambitious”. Stone falls also continue to occur regularly above the disaster village.

The very feasibility of a reconstruction by 2029 therefore blaten: new village must come remains in question. as is the possibility of rebuilding on the original site. A new danger assessment is scheduled for fall.

Despite these challenges, Matthias Bellwald claims that the first clearing works are advancing favorably. A rescue route was finalized six weeks in advance on the calendar. now allowing the circulation of construction machinery and farmers with special authorizations. The restoration of the electricity network would also advance faster than expected.
