In early 2026, electricity prices in Geneva will drop by 9%, in order to reflect the decrease in market prices. But this reduction will not benefit all small consumers, due to a new federal law, introducing a new billing method.

The counting, the measurement of consumption, was so far billed according to the quantity consumed. Geneva households, in particular, paid little. However, following a change of law at the federal level, this amount will be invoiced via a monthly package of 6.70 francs per counter “for households and small businesses”, explain industrial services (GIS) in a press release.

Difference between households and craftsmen

Thus, small consumers (households) will undergo a slight increase, despite this drop in prices, around 1.40 additional francs on average. For villas or craftsmen’s premises, there will be a decrease in the bill, up to 46 francs per month.

SIGs will also lower gas prices, from 1is october. From 12.58 francs, the kilowatt hour of blue vital gas will increase to 11.18 francs. Why? After an explosion in 2022, the markets experienced a more relaxed period.

Gas too

But there either, small consumers will not be advantaged since they will also experience an increase in their bill. “The latter have long benefited from a slightly preferential rate, which did not cover all the costs of the network, which did not fully correspond to the rules of the gas branch,” continue the GIS, who therefore decided to adapt the prices.

For customers who consumed up to 10,000 kWh per year, the bill will increase by 20% on average. Villas and craftsmen will benefit from a drop. Aids will be provided by the public management in the form of a energy premium or home support to encourage energy savings.
