In short:
  • The new high level of service bus reduces the journey between Gex and Geneva to forty and one minutes.
  • The lanes reserved for buses now avoid traffic jams at the crossroads.
  • Line 61 offers an express journey with fewer intermediate stops.
  • The attendance of lines 60-61 increased by nearly 200,000 users.

It is a bowl of air for the north of Greater Geneva, which should see its congestion rate drop. The French and Geneva authorities inaugurated this Friday the total deployment of the high level of service bus (BHNS) between Gex and Geneva. With a clean route, this transport aims to divert the pendulums from their cars.

The route takes up more or less that of lines 60 and 61 (formerly Bus F), which see their journey time significantly reduced thanks to the various arrangements to avoid the traffic jams during rush hour. The work started in 2018 and made it possible to redevelop the 17 kilometers separating Gex from downtown Geneva.

20 minutes less

To give an idea of the improvements, note that a journey between Geneva and Gex lasted approximately an hour in 2025. Now, it will take about forty and a minute during rush hour.

How to explain such a reduction in journey time? On the French side, the agglomeration of the Pays de Gex and the Department of Ain have redeveloped several crossroads, providing them with a lane reserved for buses, allowing them to avoid traffic jams. In Geneva, the authorities reconfigured the route of lines 60 and 61 in order to allow them to pass via the nations tunnel, significantly shortening the duration of the journey.

The rise in power of the BHNS was gradually made from 2023, until the full planning of the network in December 2024. Now, the pressed pendulums will be able to take line 61 during peak hours, which has fewer stops and a separate route of the cars. The 60, it will serve all the historical judgments of line F, with a slightly lower pace.

An “essential step”

“This strengthening of the public transport offer is an essential step to reduce the border automobile pressure in Geneva,” says Pierre Maudet, a magistrate in charge of mobility. This direct connection to the city center will be completed, in December 2028, by the tram of nations a new rapid and reliable alternative for those who cross the border daily. ”

And BHNS arrangements already seem to bear fruit. The agglomeration of the Pays de Gex notes that in 2019, lines 60-61 identified 672,488 climbs. Five years later, in 2024, there were 867,776.
