The number of asylum seekers has experienced a sharp increase for a few weeks at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border post, due to the migration policies of the Trump administration, and Canada must act to correct the situation, claims the spokesperson for the action committee of people without status, Frantz André.

According to the latter, the agreement on third party safe countries, which prevents asking asylum by arriving in Canada via the United States, unless there is a few exceptional cases, including that of having a family member who is a Canadian citizen.
However, masses of refugees, especially Haitians, flee the United States currently for fear of having forcibly returned to their country of origin.
It is at this point that the agreement on third parties safe serves these asylum seekers who are upset to criteria that no longer reflect the reality of Trump America, said Mr. André.
“Canada must recognize that the United States is no longer a safe country because we have eliminated programs that are completely legal and we deport people without trial,” said the latter in an interview with LCN.
“The United States creates us a wave at our borders, cause us costs, but it is not only a financial cost, but a human cost. These are people who legitimately were in the United States and suddenly they are made illegal and potentially deported without any trials, “added Frantz André.
