No more cronyism, make way for an objective methodology: here is where the next 32 radars-trunchers of Wallonia (card) will be placed (card)

François desquesnes wants to fight against the “Killers” of the road: 150 radars will be installed this year along the Walloon roads

A few months ago, he promised the arrival of several dozen additional radars-truncies in Wallonia. It remained to know where. The location of around thirty radars-trunings is now validated. All will be active, in both directions of traffic and on several bands in the event of a road of 2 times 1 and 2 times 2 bands, by the end of the year.

How was their location chosen? No more sprinkling of the past which consisted in promoting the municipalities having the same political obedience as the minister in post, places a distribution of resources on the basis of objective criteria.

An objective grid based on several criteria

And a priority grid now officially established. “I asked that objective criteria are established to determine where the radars would be installed as a priority, comments the Minister ofquesnes. It was necessary to set up a methodology to explain to the local authorities and the police areas, why, their request was not met. This does not mean that it will never be: the most priority radars will be installed in the first, the others. provided in 2026 or 2027. “

Fighting speeding, Wallonia is the 3rd: around thirty new radars-trunings will be put into office next year!

The municipalities and police ares were therefore invited to share their requests. And, on the basis of the list, a prioritization of radars has been established. Based on three primordial criteria.

With first place accidentology in the past five years. Or from 2019 to 2023, 2024 statistics are not yet available at the time of the proceedings. “And obviously, the more the accidents and the greater their severity, the more points allocated to the desired location.”

Second criterion: the real speed measured at the problematic location. “This does not make sense to install a radar-tronkey in a place where speed is respected, comments François DESQUESNES. So we measured the real speed of motorists in the various places. And we obtained an objective speed measurement. The more it is high, the more the location climbs in the list of priorities for the installation of a radar.”

Finally, the third fundamental criterion: proximity to sensitive places On the section like schools, sports centers or hospitals.

In total, these three criteria represent 60 % of the total prioritization score.

Additional criteria to refine the classification

To these are added additional criteria including that of geographic distribution. “It takes into account what already exists in the area concerned. This explains why the Walloon Brabant will not receive any radar-tronns this year. There are already on the problem axes like the N25. My goal is also to ensure that Walloon territory is equipped in a balanced radars.”

Another criterion taken into account: the existence or not of a radar in this place. “Sometimes there are requests that relate to the replacement or renewal of radars. But if the targeted axis did not yet have radars, it will be rather favored compared to the one who had it. Because, even excluding service, a radar has a dissuasive effect. And motorists have gotten into the habit of rolling more carefully in places where there is already a box. Out of service radar will not be replaced but only that it will not be a priority. “

Finally, there are two criteria taken into account: first of all the fact that the desired location is in the urbanized area or not. “In Mouscron, for example, the N58 goes from the highway to the city center. Placing a radar-tronkey in this place is forcing cars to slow down before entering town.”

Then traffic density. The higher it, the more a radar there will be prioritized. “All of these criteria make it possible to classify the different sites and to prioritize the priorities. The administration offered me a grid and it is the application of this grid which determines where the radars will be placed. Perhaps there will be adjustments to the criteria in the future but a prioritization based on the number of accidents, the speed and the sensitive places, it is the best way to operate. And it is the fruit of the ascent of the raising of police.”

Each radar-tronkey will require an investment of 100,000 euros.
