OPENAI browser: end of reign for Chrome?

Soon, perhaps this week, Openai will introduce its IA web browser.

Officially, neither the company nor its CEO, Sam Altman, usually talkative, have communicated on this subject. Unofficially, it is a secret of Polichinelle that Openai works on a browser intended to compete not only the already marketed web browsers, Perplexity Comet and Dia, but also n ° 1, Google Chrome.

As Sam Altman explained during a Sequoia Capital event in May 2025, the use of chatgpt varies according to age: ” The elderly use Chatgpt as a substitute for Google “, While” the twenty -year -old and thirties use it as a ” life advisor » et « students use it as an operating system ». To do all of this, whether you are Baby-Boomer, Generation X, Millennial or Alpha Generation, you use a browser.

It is therefore completely logical that Optai offers a dedicated web browser.

What should we expect from the Openai browser?

I expect the program to look like a web browser based on Chromium, because it is the one that everyone currently uses outside Mozilla, with an entirely integrated AI assistant. Thus, for example, as Comet already does, it can extract the data from your open tabs to better respond to your requests.

In addition, Chromium being a de facto standard in the sector, Openai will not have to reinvent the browsers’ wheel. This will also make it easier to support the websites, extensions and existing web applications. Thus, its developers will be able to focus on the integration of advanced AI features.

The first clues, allegedly coming from developers and beta versions, suggest that the browser will also include features such as summaries of articles, videos and PDF generated by AI, as well as the management of images, voice and files, relying on the capacities of GPT-4O. In addition, beyond traditional automatic filling, the browser is supposed to be able to intelligently complement forms and plan tasks according to the user’s intentions. For example, I use different messaging accounts for my professional and personal use. In theory, he should use my professional account for travel reservations, but my personal account for my Amazon orders.

By appropriating the browser, Openai will have access not only to user questions, but also to almost all of their behavior and data. Historically, this was the cornerstone of the economic model of Google, and Openai, like all the other companies in AI, would like to take it.

In other words, the more OpenAi access your data, the less you give it to Google or to third parties. It is a win-win situation, according to Sam Altman.

Competition of AI browsers

Like its competitors, Openai seems to favor AI as the digital proxy of the user. In the best of all worlds, you will get up in the morning and start working and playing with Openai until the end of the night.

Comet with Perplexity, on the other hand, adopts a more traditional approach. It is a browser intended for researchers and professionals, which emphasizes synthesis, contextual understanding, quotation of sources and the automation of cross paintings. It replaces traditional research with the Perplexity response engine.

Dia is a complete overhaul with AI as default interaction mode. She promises a ” Workspace bone “, Where AI proactively manages the workflows, consults the history of the sessions, suggests the following actions and contextualizes intentions. With him, you are not only navigating, you let AI guide you to your destinations and your answers.

Let us not forget that Google is not to be outdone. His approach is progressive but ambitious. The company incorporates conversational AI into daily navigation while avoiding sudden and disruptive changes. For example, Gemini in Chrome integrated the conversational AI directly into the browser interface. Thanks to him, you can now invoke Gemini directly from the current web page if you have subscribed to one of the Google AI Pro Google AI Ultra subscriptions.

However, it is unlikely that Google will integrate AI as deep in its browsers as other companies. It should not be forgotten that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) continues to push Google to give in Chrome. Integrating AI in depth into Chrome will be useless. It is even possible that Openai ends up buying Chrome.

Of course, Microsoft puts even more on AI in its programs. Edge is now a native browser for Copilot. Users can access it with a single click from the sidebar or by typing @copilot in the address bar, thus transforming the browser into an AI assistant in real time capable of answering their questions, summarizing pages and helping them in their creative tasks, all without leaving the current tab.

Today, Copilot is so integrated into Windows that with Copilot Vision on Windows 10 and 11, it can virtually monitor anything that is on your screen to help you work.

Which one will suit you best? Personally, I prefer Perplexity and Comet, but it is too early to assert it with certainty. The AI programs evolve so quickly that it is almost impossible to follow them. I wouldn’t get involved for one of them for the moment. On the other hand, I will test them.
