OPENAI, a generative pioneer of artificial intelligence (AI) since the launch of Chatgpt in 2022, released a new model on Thursday. “GPT-5 is like talking to a doctoral level expert on any subject,” said Sam Altman, the boss of the company. He compared GPT-3, at work in the first version of Chatgpt, to a high school student who, “sometimes gives the right answer and, sometimes, responds anything” and GPT-4 to a university student.
Technology giants compete with new, more sophisticated new models, capable of “reasoning” and performing tasks independently, with an AI so -called “general” or “superintent”, with cognitive capacities greater than those of humans.
The pace has accelerated, because the different groups seek to make their assistant IA – Chatgpt, Gemini (Google), Meta AI, Claude (Anthropic) – essential for the largest possible number of users and developers. But Chatgpt remains the best known name in the general public. It has nearly 700 million weekly active users.
“Super power”
Openai has presented GPT-5 as its model the “smarter”, “faster” and “most useful” to date. “GPT-5 can really do impressive things for you. It can instantly create software, on demand […] It is a great incredible power, ”praised Sam Altman.
One of his engineers, Yann Dubois, asked the Assistant IA in everyday language to create an online application to learn French with games. GPT-5 immediately produced hundreds of code lines and the elementary website was born in a few minutes.
According to the company, GPT-5 is also less subject to “hallucinations”: he “admits” when he does not know instead of inventing an apparently convincing response. Security has also been reinforced. With GPT-5, in case of doubt about potential criminal motivations, “the model will be limited to general information, which cannot harm,” said Alex Beutel, a company security manager.
Microsoft, the main OPENAI investor, has announced that GPT-5 is now available on its various platforms for engineers.
