Socialist youth: take the rich to finance climate protection

In the crowded hall of Bern station, this Tuesday, passers -by saw tickets fall … Unfortunately for them, they were false: it was actually a symbolic action of socialist youth (JS) to launch its campaign for the vote of November 30, concerning the initiative for the future. As a reminder, the text wants to establish a tax on major inheritances in order to finance climate protection. Thus, the authorities would benefit from no less than 6 billion francs per year from ultra-rich to invest in “socially just” measures in terms of housing, work and public services.

For the president of the JS, Mirjam Hostetmann, Switzerland is “far too little” for the climate: “If we still want to save our future, we now need a socially just climate protection.” The Confederation currently devotes about two billion a year to the fight against warming, while it would take 12 billion, according to the party, to achieve the objectives established for 2050. Worse, the new federal savings plans provide for sections of several hundred million. Vice-president Julien Berthod believes that the wealthy fortunes “have been built by exploiting human beings and nature” and that their holders must “pay for their climatic crimes”.
