The title of the Tesla electric vehicle specialist lost more than 8% in Wall Street on Thursday, the day after the publication of its results for the second quarter, which showed a drop in sales.

Around 2:15 p.m. GMT, Tesla action released 8.45% to $ 304.45. Since the start of the year, the title has lost almost 20%.

The group announced on Wednesday a drop of 16% of its net profit in the second quarter, assigned by a decline in vehicle sales in a context of increased competition and consequences of the involvement of its boss Elon Musk in the American political sphere.

Between April and June, the American automotive group has garnered turnover of $ 22.50 billion (-12% over one year) and a net profit of 1.17 billion, below the expectations of analysts’ consensus.

“We could know a few difficult quarters. (…) The fourth quarter (2025), the first quarter and the second quarter (2026),” said Elon Musk on Wednesday during an audioconference.

“There are still obstacles, customs duties and obvious growth challenges for Tesla over the next 3 to 6 months,” said Wedbush in a Daniel Ives.

Tesla must still negotiate a crucial turn linked to autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI).

Mr. Musk, however, assured that once the autonomy “deployed on a large scale in the second half” 2026, the situation would improve.

This “aggressive strategy focused on AI is (…) the best news for Tesla investors”, according to Mr. Ives.

The title of the company has been heckled several times on the New York Stock Exchange since the start of the year, sometimes evolving above, sometimes below the symbolic threshold of the $ 1,000 billion in market capitalization.

The Tesla action has notably suffered from Elon Musk’s positions within the Trump administration, then its arms passes with the American president.

The boss of Tesla and SpaceX spent nearly $ 280 million to contribute to the Donald Trump election.
