Several calls to “block everything” in France on September 10, 2025 broadcast largely on social networks, emanating from collectives dissociated from traditional and political unions.
By means of publications on social networks, the organizers call for a real stop of the country, combining boycott, disobedience and solidarity. “From September 10, 2025, we come into total and unlimited stop … We no longer pay, no longer consume, let’s no longer work … Our only power is the total boycott,” we can read in one of the most repeated publications.
A survey coordinated by the French press describes a movement “in the gas state” which has spread on various social platforms. Messages invoke claims such as the Citizen Initiative Referendum (RIC), better pensions, resistance or a general strike. The movement emerged in May, but gained momentum following the budgetary announcements in July.
This movement claims to be apolitical, but was relayed by former yellow vests, students, precarious people, caregivers and other groups, although their objectives can diverge.
Some Federations of the CGT (Chemistry, Trade, Mines-Energy) as well as Force Ouvrière have filed strike notice from September 1 and call for actions on 10, with concrete mobilizations envisaged. Managers of rebellious France, such as Jean-Luc Mélenchon, expressed their membership in the movement, while highlighting its independence.
According to some observers, this movement has exploited a persistent discomfort since the crisis of yellow vests: feeling of downgrading, fiscal frustration, contempt for the elites. The symbolic choice of the date – a Wednesday – marks a break with the classic forms of mobilization, often concentrated on Saturdays.
This new call for popular mobilization marks the continuation of a social climate under tension with the approach of a crucial budgetary vote. If it remains uncertain that this movement translates into massive actions on D -Day, it nevertheless contributes to forging an atmosphere of protest more widely shared – and can prepare the ground for other mobilizations in the fall.
