The French withdraw less often from liquid, but larger sums, according to the Banque de France

The number of ATMs of tickets (DAB) – 42,758 units at the end of 2024 – decreased in a similar manner over the period: -3.5 % between 2023 and 2024 and -7.9 % between 2022 and 2024. The average amount of withdrawal to DABs is on the other hand oriented upwards. He reached 126 euros in 2024, compared to 82 euros in 2014, note the authors of the study.

“The French therefore less often remove species in the DAB, but for higher amounts,” they conclude. The supply has adapted to demand. The share of tickets of 50 euros injected into payment circuits has increased in France in France over the past ten years. The request for tickets is not only motivated by a transactional reason, underlines the Banque de France. The cash is essentially stored under the mattress, in the euro zone and beyond (Eastern Europe, Africa, etc.).

More payments in bank cards

The share of cash payments in points of sale (supermarkets, restaurants, hairdressers, etc.), oriented downwards, is for the first time last year, passed behind that of bank cards in France, according to a study published at the end of 2024 by the European Central Bank (ECB). In value, this part is stable, according to this study.

In terms of access to species, “departmental disparities exist”, according to another study, relayed in June on the site of the Caisse des Dépôts (CDC). “While almost all the inhabitants of Île-de-France and Paca have access to banking agencies in their municipality, more than half of the inhabitants of Haute-Saône (59 %), Creuse (59 %), Meuse (57 %), and Lot (54 %) is private,” she said.
