The Transports et Environnement Association (ATE) filed a petition to challenge the restriction of 30km/h on the locality on Friday. The text called “Tempo 30” was signed by more than 22,000 people.

“Their message is clear and strong: not to measures” which weaken security, health, democracy and local autonomy. ” The 30 km/h is not a fad, said Stéphanie Penher, the director of the ATE, according to the written version of her speech.

For her, this speed limitation saves lives, reduce noise pollution or even improve the quality of life. According to the ATE, this tool is however threatened by a project of the Federal Council which wants to impose a “centralizing shackles, disconnected from the field and real needs” of the population.

Attack on the autonomy of the municipalities

In 2024, the Parliament transmitted to the Federal Council a motion responsible for slowing down the extension of 30 km/h in cities. According to the German -speaking press, the Minister of Transport Albert Rösti would like to go through a prescription voice to make this choice concretize.

A process that would make it impossible to attack the measure by referendum. A choice that ATE considers as an unacceptable attack on the autonomy of municipalities and cantons. (JZS/ATS)
