While schoolchildren are preparing to go back to school, Teacher associations are concerned about the increase in school absenteeism in Switzerland. They presented a series of measures in Bern Thursday to understand this phenomenon.
Teachers’ unions note that more and more students are frequently absent and unjustifiedsometimes for a few days, sometimes several weeks. Absenteeism concerned in recent years, especially the secondary level, but the phenomenon is now also extends to primary school.
To cope with this scourge, the unions submitted a list of prevention measures on Wednesday. We find in particular the awareness of parents, teachers and specialized psychosocial staff to recognize the first alarm signals. Among other things, these are withdrawal, anxious behavior or physical disorders.
The children’s and adolescent psychologist Fabian Grolimund explains, in 24 hours, that school absenteeism corresponds to burnout in the world of work. “Many children are completely exhausted in the evening. In addition to school, there is noisy and tiring lunch, then music lessons, sport, etc. Some have a completely overloaded weekly schedule. To rest, they go on their mobile phone, which exhausts them even more, ”he notes.
