AFP“This war will end”: Donald Trump expressed a certain optimism on Monday on the possibility of reaching peace in Ukraine on Monday, receiving volodymyr Zelensky on Monday. It quickly appeared that this crucial meeting would be very different from that which had seen the American president publicly humiliate his Ukrainian counterpart at the end of February.
Donald Trump, welcoming Volodymyr Zelensky at around 1:15 pm local, complimented her on his dark jacket and shirt, replacing his usual military inspiration.
The Ukrainian head of state, stretched the last time by the supporters of the Republican billionaire for his choice of clothing and because he had not expressed enough gratitude, this time thanked his host from the start of their interview. “Thank you for the invitation and thank you very much for your efforts, your personal efforts to end the killing and arrest this war,” said the Ukrainian president in the oval office.
“Very good protection”
Donald Trump, without going into details, assured that the United States “would be involved” in the future security of Ukraine, a crucial subject for kyiv and the Europeans. “We will give them very good protection,” he promised, after recently specified that any security guarantee should be invented outside the NATO framework, to be accepted by Moscow.
On the other hand, he again judged that a cease-fire was not necessary to initiate a peace process, contrary to what the Ukrainians and their European allies ask.
The American president also repeated that he wanted to organize a three meeting with the Vladimir Putin, “if everything was going well”, and announced that he would call the Russian leader, whom he had met on Friday in Alaska, later on Monday.
Europeans who came to block
After their bilateral meeting, Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump were joined by European leaders, who came to block around the Ukrainian head of state in Washington.
French President Emmanuel Macron asked during this summit meeting that Europeans be associated with the discussions between the United States, Russia and Ukraine once Donald Trump has managed to put around the same table Vladimir Putin and Volodyr Zelensky.

AFP“The idea of a trilateral meeting is very important because it is the only way to solve the problem. I think that in the process, we will need a quadrilateral meeting, because when we talk about security guarantees (for Ukraine), we are talking about the security of the whole European continent, “he launched before Donald Trump, the main European leaders and the secretary general of NATO Mark Rutte.
For his part, the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz insisted on the need for a cease-fire prior to negotiations of a peace agreement on Ukraine. “I cannot imagine that the next meeting takes place without a cease-fire, let’s work in this direction and try to put pressure on Russia,” he said, shortly after the American president judged that such a measure was not necessary.
