Wood structures that disturb the Forillon park

With the arrival of tourists in Gaspésie, the management of the Forillon national park observes many acts which contravene its regulations on the beaches. It implores visitors not to make fires on the beach or to erect structures with strike wood.

Its conservation teams have had to demolish wood structures erected by visitors in recent weeks to avoid accidents.

They can be destabilized, either by the construction itself, which is not solid, but also by the passage of the tide. If children come to settle under the structure, since this structure is not solid, it could still happen significant accidentsunderlines Daniel Sigouin, manager of the conservation of natural and cultural resources for the Forillon National Park.

He also recalls that it is forbidden to make beach fires with strike wood in the National Park, for security reasons.

Depending on the fire index and the winds that can get up fairly quickly here, we want to prevent stakes on fire elsewhere in the foresthe said. This is why we confine the lights in prescribed places.

Mr. Sigouin also explains that The beach wood is excellent to counter coastal erosion in a natural way.

When a wave hit the wood, the sand goes […] bury it. Between the pieces of wood, the plants will start to push, which will create a network of roots that will stabilize the sandhe specifies.

If this is not the case for all visitors, Maude Proulx, a holidaymaker from Sherbrooke, says he is aware of these good practices.

If we want to keep our parks in good condition for a long time, for several years, it would be important to maintain this because if everyone begins to pick up everything and make fires, that’s when the parks deteriorateshe explains.

While the illegal campsite has been making a return for a few days to the beaches of the Gaspésie, the Forillon National Park is not spared either. The campsite is prohibited on the park beaches as well as in parking, recalls the management of the National Park.
