In short:
  • The newspaper “The Region” has published its latest edition after nineteen years of existence.
  • This closure leaves 19 people on the tile.
  • Main cause of this disappearance: the increase in postal distribution costs.
  • Is there a solution to find a daily life in the North of Vaud?.

If there was a miracle, it has not yet taken place to “The region”. This Friday morning, his subscribers held thefinal edition from the North Vaudois daily newspaper, founded in Yverdon in March 2006.

Nineteen people are today on the tile and the premises of rue du Lac have emptied at the end of the morning. A few hours earlier, “we felt sadness and concern, but the staff remained worthy,” comments Jean-Claude Vagnières.

And the chairman of the board of directors and majority shareholder of the company in over-indebtedness to resume: “We were not there to bury this newspaper, this time will perhaps come in a few weeks, but to say goodbye, even if we are going to meet again regularly during the period of their notice.”

Sober lyrics and strong words

Sober words, which contrast with strong words, signed by his pen, and printed in one of this 3981e and last issue. A column in which he says his deep gratitude to all his collaborators, thanks all the partners of the title and his readers, but “does not thank the post office or the federal communication office for their rigidity and their lack of discernment”.

The drastic cut In indirect press aid granted to “the region”, added to an explosion of the annual distribution invoice for all-households-from 160,000 francs to 520,000 francs-was right for the finances of the daily. La Poste is in a monopoly situation in the North of Vaud.

Increase in loads

“Our only problem is the distribution of this all-household. You cannot get by with an increase in loads of 350,000 francs. But we cannot give up this free weekly edition, given what it brings us financially, “explains Isidore Raposo, member of the Board of Directors and founder of the newspaper.

Anyway, only one person will go to the editorial staff from Monday to receive the mail and answer the phone. Behind the scenes, we still study tracks, kept secret, just to not arouse too many hopes.

A new distribution system?

Faced with the same situation, the free newspaper company free “Lausanne cities” et “TAKE NOTE” decided to launch its own distribution service in January. A solution to which the daily life “La Côte” has quickly subscribed, since based within the department of action of this new entity, unlike “the region”.

The fact remains that the appearance, called his wishes by Jean-Claude Vagnières, from a successor to the Yverdonian newspaper may be there.
