An Albertan who wanted to exterminate Catholics and who terrorized the tenants from his building during the pandemic recently was the subject of a terrorism investigation by the Royal Gendarmerie of Canada.
Christian Barriault prevailed this weekend by the RCMP. The Hydro-Québec corporate security team communicated in June with the authorities concerning a threatening message on the social network X.
Fearing that he commits an act of terrorism, the Canada Criminal Prosecution Service asked that Barriart, 38, contracts a “commitment not to disturb public order”.
The denunciation was however withdrawn on Monday to be replaced by criminal charges. Barriault is now accused of having uttered death threats to Quebecers, having uttered threats to burn, destroy or damage Hydro-Québec equipment, and to have encouraged “everyone to destroy facilities or life”.
The Albertan, who lived until recently in Montreal, is not at his first trouble with justice. Last year, he received a two-year probation for harassment, non-compliance with harassing conditions and communications.
At the time, he rented a room for the low price of $ 242 in the basement of a building in Montreal belonging to the roof organization in town.
Insults and hatred
His problematic behavior began towards the end of 2020, according to a decision by the administrative housing court.
Barriault sent insulting, hateful and threatening emails to the social management manager of the building. He also treated it as racist, homophobic, rot and “piece of shit».
Another employee also noted insulting or hateful messages in the building. To the point where she was fearful during activities in the community room, lest Barriault will arise there and make a crisis there. She even had nightmares.
During this same period, he would also have posted messages in common places, in particular to insult the concierges and deal with pedophiles, still according to the TAL decision.
Exterminate Catholics
His writings also included “more general allegations with the effect than Trump and the Americans hate Catholics that they wish to exterminate”, a project that Barriault Appuy was supporting and in which he wanted to participate.
According to a tenant, he made this kind of remarks when he was near a metro station, sporting small American flags.
His behavior terrorized several tenants of the building. In April 2022, he was finally expelled from the community building.
Christian Barriault was also expelled in mid-July from another accommodation in Villeray for non-payment of rent. There too, he would have made threats to his owner.
“He gave me the keys and he left with his two cats on his cargo bike,” explained Frédéric Destrée. Sometimes he was correct and kind. When it was not going, he could become violent and threats. ”
Despite the serious accusations, Barriault was able to regain his freedom on Tuesday at the Montreal courthouse. The crown did not oppose it. “I was born in Alberta and I feel good in Alberta,” he said, giving the court the address of a refuge in this province.
His file will return in October for the rest of the procedures. The RCMP refused to answer questions from Journal.
