The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano, located in Indonesia, erupted again on Saturday. He sent a massive column of ash upper up to 18 kilometers above sea level, according to the geological agency of this Asian island state.
(Keystone-ATS) The eruption took place at 1:05 am local (7:05 p.m. Friday in Switzerland) on the eastern island of Flores, in the province of Nusa Tenggara Oriental. A plume of gray and black ash has since been visible for miles around.
An eruption had already been reported on Friday, sending ashes at almost 10 km altitude.
The alert state remains maximum, the local authorities indicate. Residents and tourists are advised to avoid any activity within a radius of 6 to 7 kilometers around the crater.
Lewotobi Laki-Laki is part of the volcanic complex of the same name, with two volcanoes. In recent years, volcanic activity has intensified. Last November, an eruption of this volcano, which projected rocks for miles around, cost ten people.
Indonesia is located on the “belt of fire”, alignment of volcanoes which borders the peaceful ocean. The country has more than 120 active volcanoes.
