Eugene Peltola crashed at the controls of a small two-seater in the mountains near St-Mary’s, in the southwest of the Arctic State, before died a few hours later.
After almost two years of investigation, a report published on Tuesday revealed that the accident was mainly due to the overload of the aircraft: more than 225 kilos of impetus were on board, almost 50 kilos above the maximum cargo authorized for takeoff.
A pair of ignition wood hung on the right wing of the plane – a common practice in Alaska – was also able to destabilize the aircraft, which crashed shortly after takeoff, according to the American Transport Safety Agency (NTSB).
According to Clint Johnson, regional manager of the NTSB, the first factor having provoked the accident “was of course overweight, there is no doubt”.
“The parasitic trail caused by the woods fixed to the right wing, and finally the wind, the mechanical turbulence of the wind at the end of the take-off zone,” also contributed to the drama, he explained to several local media.
“The combination of all these factors has led to this tragic accident,” he summed up.
Mr. Peltola was the husband of Mary Peltola, Alaska’s first Amboska woman to have sat at the US Congress.
The Democrat had beaten in 2022 Sarah Palin, ex-Governor of Alaska and former unhappy candidate for the vice-presidency of the United States in the 2008 election with John McCain, to take a seat in the House of Representatives.
In the last elections in November, Ms. Peltola had failed to be re -elected.
