Arthabaska: the wander of going from the PQ, the ceiling of Éric Duhaime

Even in his wildest dreams, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon could not have hoped for the best result. The Parti Québécois (PQ) won a district where he had been absent for almost a quarter of a century with more than 45 % of the vote and a dozen points ahead. He continues mainly on the momentum that started in the constituency of Jean-Talon almost two years ago and which continued last winter in Terrebonne.

After having conquered new land in the National Capital and in Greater Montreal, the PQ Now a breakthrough in Quebec in regions and, a fortiori, in a region where it has not been seen for a long time.

The election of Alex Boissonneault allows the party to double its deputation in relation to the last general ballot, but it especially reinforces the narrative according to which the PQ is best able to replace the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) next year. If victory is possible in Arthabaska, few constituencies are now out of reach.

Same result confirms the PQ In his choices, including that of approaching themes that are more generally associated with the right, such as good management of the state and the reduction of the tax burden, which has not deprived his candidate throughout the campaign.

The sovereignists would be wrong to boast. If the result is so sparkling, it is first because they succeeded, from the start, to camp the election as a duel PQpcq pcq – The purpose of the election being to choose the political party best capable of expressing the dissatisfaction of voters with regard to the government.

The game will be very different next year in the general elections. Not only will voters have to choose a government, but they will have to decide if they really want to undertake a new referendum adventure. Already, PQ organizers admit that the project has not always been easy to defend on the electoral ground in recent months.

Hard tomorrows for pcq pcq

For Eric Duhaime, defeat is bitter. The Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ) has certainly seen its supports progress, but the conservative chief had only one objective in mind: victory. Winning it would not only have opened the doors of the National Assembly, but it would especially have allowed the pcq pcq to present yourself in rampart against the rise of the Parti Québécois. Pain lost.

First on the field in the spring, the conservative chief has however spared no effort to enter Parliament. Kitchen assemblies, intensive display and sustained presence in social media will not have been enough. The calls to make useful work by allowing a party leader to be represented in the National Assembly, either.

The Conservative Party of Quebec certainly carries ideals that many citizens are identified with, but it is difficult to see how he can translate them politically with the current voting system if his leader does not even manage to be elected. If his activists are numerous, his opponents are too. Éric Duhaime will be able to try his luck again next year again, unless his motivation is stretching in the face of the inability of his party to unravel the ceiling which prevents him from obtaining any representation.

A new slap for the CAQ

Quickly sending his speech of defeat, François Legault said he assumed thefull responsibility The skinny 7 % support collected by his party. The Prime Minister promises immediate changes, but boredom is that he had precisely held the same speech after his defeat in Jean-Talon will soon be two years ago. The next day, the chief of the CAQ had thus resurrected the project of third link, but this idea seems in retrospective to have done him more wrong than good.

One year before the next general elections, François Legault’s situation looks a little more like that of Justin Trudeau in the aftermath of his defeat in Toronto – St. Paul’s. Like his former vis-à-vis, the Quebec Prime Minister does not seem ready to give way.

With almost 10 % of votes, the Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ) does better than the CAQ and finish in third position. The challenge that awaits Pablo Rodriguez in Quebec in regions is nonetheless colossal, despite favorable polls that his election as a liberal chief aroused.

Québec Solidaire closes walking with less than 1.5 % of votes. We will have said everything about it.

At 59.46 %, the participation rate is exceptional for a by -election – especially since the CAQby calling voters in the polls in the middle of summer, did nothing to promote it. The message for the government is only stronger and the slap, more painful.
