Asbestos in clay: no risk in Quebec, says the city

Alerted by the presence of asbestos in a product used on clay tennis fields in Saint-Sauveur, Quebec City has analyzed its own facilities and ensures that they are without danger.

“The city therefore maintains the opening of its facilities and would like to reassure the population of land safety,” the organization confirmed by press release.

Let us recall that the city of Saint-Sauveur, in the Laurentians, had announced the closure of its land after discovering that a “product used for the maintenance of tennis courts in clay clay [dépassait] The Canadian standard on asbestos products ”.

Indeed, Environment Canada had detected a concentration of the substance greater than the Quebec standard (0.1%) in Har-Tru bags, a product used everywhere in North America.

Many municipalities had followed suit and closed their facilities preventively while waiting for further analyzes.

“Product manipulation”

In Quebec, the city has suspended the use of the product since 1is August, carried out a soil and bag analysis, and cleaned potentially contaminated equipment.

“The risks mainly concern the handling of the product and not the practice of tennis by the players,” says the city’s communications department.

It is also added that additional analyzes should be carried out by Environment Canada and Health Canada. Quebec City will find an option to spare the Har-Tru product if the results which will result from it recommend it.
