Washington, 1990. In the anteroom of the Oval Office, a handful of men are waiting for their appointment with George HW Bush. Among them, the chief of staff of the White House, John Sununu, the national security advisor of the 41st president, Brent Scowcroft, and the director of the CIA, William Webster. There is also a young woman with a matte complexion, with curly black hair, who jaws the end of a pen nervously by rereading her notes. When Bush Senior brings the areopage to enter, Webster presents it to him as Jonna Mendez, the “Camouflage chef” from the external intelligence agency.

In front of the American president and her close guard, the young woman explains the progress of her team, within the technical services office, in matters of disguise. With the latest prototypes, she says, the CIA will be able to disguise its spies by changing their gender and their skin color without their KGB opponents-the Berlin Wall has just disappeared, not yet the Cold War-noticing them, so much the illusion is perfect.
