“At the edge of operability”: Italy: doctors remove a 15 -kilo tumor!

There was little hope for a patient who had been admitted to a specialized hospital in Aviano with a 15 -kilo tumor. Italian doctors were able to save the life of this woman, however.

At the Centro Di Riferimento Oncologico (CRO) in Aviano, the doctors managed to rid a woman of a 15 -kilo tumor.

CRO

At the Once Reference Center (CRO) in Aviano, in the province of Pordenone (Italy), an average age patient has undergone the ablation of an abdominal liposarcoma of more than 40 centimeters and weighing more than 15 kilograms.

The mass came from the great epiploon, a fold of the peritoneum hanging from the stomach like an apron and covers most of the abdominal organs.

This mass has invaded the entire abdominal cavity. They cause symptoms such as pain, swelling, digestion difficulties and put pressure on neighboring organs.

Less than 20 cases

Less than 20 cases of such tumors have been described in the literature, but never of such magnitude. The tumor obviously affected the patient’s life a lot and left no hope of healing.

The operation was carried out by the general oncological surgery team, led by Claudio Belluco, and the anesthesia and resuscitation team, led by Fabrizio Brescia.

The same CRO team had carried out a similar operation last year, particularly complex and delicate due to the presence of more than 16 liters of liquid in the abdominal cavity.

The case must be treated in a scientific manner

Specialists speak of synergy between surgical staff and anesthesia staff who have made the operation safely and give the patient real chance of healing.

“The preoperative examinations indicated an image at the limit of operability,” explains Dr. Belluco. “We took up the challenge and it has earned the trouble: the mass has actually been removed entirely without other organs being sacrificed.”

The Italian doctor continues: “The scarcity of this type of tumor requires scientific treatment of the case, as this experience could also be useful for the treatment of other patients with similar pathologies”.
