August could send the summer in overtime

Published on August 7, 2025 at 10:55 p.m.

Summer 2025 is already hot to the point that it could overflow on the fall. According to the meteorologist Réjean Ouimet, the conditions that we are currently observing are typical of a summer which clings to September. And data from recent decades support this hypothesis.

A hot August = a still summer September?

“What makes the heat persists so late in season is a precursor of a summer that clings in September,” explains Réjean Ouimet. In other words, when August exceeds seasonal normal, September often follows.

Before 1990 (since 1942), over 8 months of hot August in Montreal, only 3 had been followed by a hot September. Since 1990, the opposite: over 14 months of hot August, 11 have been followed by a September also above normal. A tendency twice as frequent as before (79 % vs 38 %).

Far later and later waves

These are the push and heat waves that extend the summer, even after the start of the school year. However, since 2010, Quebec has recorded several waves (3 consecutive days where we observe more than 30 ° C in Quebec) of heat in September: in 2024, 2023, 2017 and 2015. And in 2018, three heat thrusts of less than three days each in Montreal were observed.

A rejected end of summer

On average, the end of hot summer (characterized by stable maximums above 23 ° C) is around September 7 in Montreal. “It is at this point that we can say that summer is behind us,” says Réjean Ouimet. But some years, this break was delayed until the fall equinox, around September 21. It has happened six times since 2010 and, interesting, these years were all preceded by an abnormally hot August.

What can we expect from 2025?

Note that summer astronomical ends the equinox, but for the start of fall meteorologicalit was from September 1. With a month of August 2025 already launched on a hot trajectory, two possibilities are emerging for the future:

  • Summer temperatures that continue at least until September;

  • A few late shines, in the form of intense heat or heat thrusts in the fall.

One thing is certain: summer 2025 has not said its last word.
