Introduced in 2020, the password manager integrated into the Microsoft Authenticator app is already living its last days. The company has announced that it would delete this functionality from its application, initially designed to generate double authentication codes. Since June, it is no longer possible to add or import new passwords into the application. In the course of July, it will be the turn of the automatic filling to stop working. Finally, from August, the passwords recorded in Authenticator will simply not be accessible.
But everything will not be lost. Synchronized passwords with a Microsoft account will remain available via the Automatic EDGE web browser filling system, provided the user is connected with the same Microsoft account. However, bank card data will not be automatically transferred, for security reasons. They must therefore be manually imported into Edge. As for people preferring to use another web browser or other password manager, they are invited to export their identifiers to another solution, before the deadline.
Note that this decision does not concern by the Passkeys, which will always remain supported by Microsoft Authenticator. As a reminder, this authentication method, safer than the traditional password, is based on a pair of cryptographic keys. It allows you to connect to an account using biometric data, a local PIN code or a secure device (a smartphone or a safety key).
