Back to school | Still thousands of teachers to find, but 96 % of the positions provided

Almost 96 % of teacher positions were filled on August 11, 2025, the Minister of Education, Bernard Drainville, announced on Thursday. But behind this figure, the reality is the same: the shortage persists, and as approaching return to class, 4,115 posts are always without holder.

Half of these 4,115 positions are part -time, according to figures provided by the government.

And their number decreases daily, underlined the Minister of Education, Bernard Drainville, in a press scrum in the National Assembly.

“This is good news, for students first, for their parents, and of course for school teams,” he said.

“So me, I am very happy,” he chained by attributing in particular progress to the Devanance of assignment sessions in school service centers.

The Minister has not been able, for the time being, precisely quantifying the proportion of these legally qualified holders to teach in primary and secondary.

But according to his projections, about one in 10 class will be in the hands of an adult who does not hold his teaching patent.

“I still insist on the fact that among those who have no patent, there are at least half who have a baccalaureate,” he insisted.

The minister presented journalists an overview of the figures before they appear in detail on the dashboard of education.

The start of the school year will take place on August 27 and 28 in several primary and secondary schools in the province.

School adaptation needs

At the Montreal School Services Center (CSSDM), the shortage of personnel promises to be marked again in the school adaptation sector, we have already warned.

“The assignment sessions for the known posts of the next school year have already taken place before the end of the last school year, with the majority of the posts provided,” it was reported to the communications department.

“However, as in recent years, the needs for school adaptation remain important,” it was specified.

Shortage and budget puzzle

To the shortage of foreseeable staff is added this year the confusion arising from the compressions announced a few days before the end of the classes.

If these were partially canceled last July, in front of a popular discontent which suggested an eventful return, they nevertheless had time to cause problems.

Because in order to comply with the government’s prescription, school departments had to resign themselves to slashing in the working hours of support employees, including technicians in special education (TES).

Reluctantly, some preferred to leave. Others have accepted a lightened task, also to their Dam. And according to echoes of the school environment, dissatisfaction has not completely dissipated.

The start of the school year will not be easy for school departments which must both return to the forced budget contortions last June and compose with the shortage of teachers.
