Baladna’s giant farm takes shape in the Algerian Sahara

The Baladna’s giant farm project in Algeria will enter its wheat production phase from the next Labeur-Semaille campaign. On Monday, the Qatari group of dairy products signed 14 contracts with suppliers and companies from Algeria and abroad for an amount of $ 500 million.

The next day, the United States Embassy in Algiers announced that American cows were on the way to Algeria for this giant farm which is established in the wilaya of Adrar, in the Algerian Sahara.

In addition to dairy cows, the United States will provide Vermont, High Tech irrigation technology to produce fodder and wheat in this mega farm of 270,000 cows via.

With the signing of these contracts, the Baladna project in Algeria has started an operational and essential first step since it is the work that will be carried out within the framework of these contracts which will lay the foundations for this mega farm.

These include the construction of the necessary infrastructure (wells, hangars, etc.) for milk production, then its processing into milk powder.

The Baladna project in Algeria is entering a new phase

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Youcef Chorfa said that the signing of contracts for equipment and installation of structures for irrigation systems, cattle farming and production of powdered milk and red meat constitutes an “essential step” of this 3.5 billion dollars project, and after “the accomplishment of procedures related to the allocation of land, the provision of land drilling permits and at the opening of the roads ”. The Minister announced the start of wheat production by Baladna from the next plowing and sowing season 2025-2026.

For him, this constitutes “concrete evidence of the contribution of this strategic project to strengthening the country’s food security”.

The project aims to allow Algeria to meet 50% of its needs in this wide consumption product. In addition to the reduction of half of the invoice for importing milk powder, the Mega Ferme d’Adrar is mainly intended to ensure food security of the country, and to reduce its dependence on foreigners for strategic products.
