The costs applied by banks for operations on the account of a deceased will not be able to exceed 850 eurosaccording to a decree published Thursday August 14, 2025 in the Official Journal.
The law, adopted in May, had already prohibited certain costs for simple successions: minors, pay less than 5,910 euros or simple successions. For more complex situations, such as a mortgage or the absence of a designated heir, a first ceiling of 1% of the amount held had been fixed.
A ceiling set at 850 euros
The decree now limits all costs to 850 euros, even if 1% of the balance exceeds this amount. This limit will be adjusted each year to follow inflation.
The initiative, carried by the socialist deputy Christine Pirès Beaune and supported by the Government, followed on mediatized cases, such as that of parents having had to pay 138 euros to close the book A of their deceased child.
The Minister delegated Véronique Louwagie praised “An advance to protect families and ensure confidence in the banking system”. The French banking federation, while respecting the law, regrets “The implementation of an administered pricing which denies the reality of the work accomplished”.
