A statue of Donald Trump, dressed in an orange prisoner combination and attached to a cross was to be exhibited from September 6 at Basel station. It is “Saint or Sinner”, a work by the English artist Mason Storm. But the Gleis 4 gallery, which planned to exhibit it, preferred to give up.
In a press release on Instagram, this traveling art gallery explained itself by saying that it did not expect such a media mixing for this work. According to her, although art is “made to arouse discussions and emotions”, the station is too sensitive. She fears that the crowds and curiosity of the public will disrupt the flow of travelers. The team promises to announce a new place soon to welcome sculpture.
Asked on site, passers -by share different opinions. Milo, 16, and Leon, 18, are not fans of the work, but believe that it corresponds to the cultural image of Basel: “But I can imagine that believers feel offended by this kind of art. Maybe the gallery owners should have chosen something less provocative, “said Leon. For Livio, Anna, Sina and Cillian, young people aged 17: “This will necessarily be debated. Nevertheless, it is also important in a society ”. As for Melanie, 20 years old and Christian, she judges the displaced play: “I know that it is not an attack on Christians, but rather a criticism of Trump. However, we can express it without using religious symbolism. ”
