At 34, Tim Wellens took off the 40th success of his career and succeeded Arnaud de Lie at the list of the online Belgium championship. Converted into a luxury teammate in his Emirati team since 2023, the Trudonnaire won his first victory this season. He was mounted on the Podium of Strade Bianche in March.
There will therefore be no double for Remco Evenepoel, titled on the time trial on Friday in Brasschaat. The double Olympic champion is now heading to the Tour de France, whose departure will be given next Saturday in Lille.
However, Evenepoel quickly put the peloton on alert with several early attacks. The rhythm left little amplitude to the other offensive of the day. After a small mechanical problem, the Schepdael runner trained with fifteen other runners the decisive movement, just under 100 km from the finish.
The prosecution was not organized since the majority of teams had a leader in the reduced group. Remco Evenepoel continued to attack tirelessly, but it was finally Tim Wellens who took advantage of the opportunity to fly away, followed from a distance by Evenepoel and Jasper Philipsen.
The pursuing duo has never managed to make up for Wellens, who traveled the last 40 kilometers alone.
Relive the Belgian Championship
Fine you live!
Thank you for following us. We meet next Saturday for the first stage of the Tour de France 2025. Good evening everyone!
Evenepoel Second, Philipsen third
Remco has distant Philipsen in the last kilometer and finished 48 seconds from the new Belgian champion. LIVYNS finishes at the foot of the podium, in front of Vermeersch, Campenaerts and Berckmoes. From Bondt, Segaert and Meurisse complete the top 10.
Tim Wellens is Belgian champion !!!
Wellens smelled the right blow by isolating himself from the leading group 40km from the finish. The UAE runner resisted the return of the Evenepoel-Philipsen duo behind him and offers his second national title after the time trial won in 2024.
Last kilometer for Wellens
The Belgian is more than 50 seconds in advance and can already savor.
3km – Evenepoel and Philipsen must remain cautious
Living, Berckmoes, Vermeersch and Campenaerts are around thirty of the duo and can still claim a place on the podium if it stops driving in front of them.
