In Belgium, prisoners revolt after a TV failure © Syspeo/SIPA
In Ghent, Belgium, in the penitentiary establishment this Saturday, August 2, the tension rose from a notch. According to the site 7Sur7nearly 76 detainees refused to reintegrate their cells after their walk, forcing the authorities to request the intervention of the police to restore calm. According to the prison administration, this reaction would be linked to a television failure the day before, which would have exacerbated a discomfort already present. “The problems with the television channels seem to be the drop of water that overflows the vase”said Kathleen Van de Vijver, spokesperson for the Belgian prison service, with our colleagues.

To the frustration caused by the television failure is added that caused by the cancellation of the visits scheduled for the previous Thursday. “They want to be guaranteed to be able to receive relatives. But this remains a delicate problem, especially because of overcrowding in prison and the lack of staff ”explains the spokesperson for the prison administration. She then specifies: “We have tried to negotiate, but they maintain their claims”.
Indignation of Internet users
This protest movement quickly sparked a wave of indignant reactions on social networks in Belgium. This is not an isolated case, however: the conditions of detention in Belgian prisons regularly make controversy. Already in early July, the publication of photos and videos showing detainees from Haren prison seeming to lead a daily life deemed too comfortable had strongly agitated public opinion on the various social networks.

Viewed millions of times, these videos, relayed by the 7SUR7 site, showed prisoners organizing holidays or playing basketball matches in a relaxed, almost festive atmosphere. Some content also revealed the presence of mobile phones in the hands of prisoners. In addition, a Tiktok account had released surprising images, including a video where a drone flies over the prison by transporting a small white package, suspected of being either drugs or a phone.
